Ya Like Jazz?
Wowee, last week was an incredible release week for jazz music!
Man on man, between the new albums and singles out last week I think it’s safe to say that it was the best new music Friday of the year so far for Jazz lovers! I’ve been spending a serious amount of time with the new Jasmine Myra record!
1. Jasmine Myra - Where Light Settles (Album of The Week)
Genre: Contemporary Jazz, Spiritual Jazz
The incredible Jasmine Myra returns with her third album and it’s absolutely breathtaking. Such rich emotive compositions and the melodies are completely enchanting. If you haven’t seen her live before I highly recommend!
2. Lakecia Benjamin - Beyond The Dawn (Single)
Genre: Contemporary Jazz
Lakecia Benjamin is back with the next single from her forthcoming album and, much like the previous singles, it’s so good that I'm already placing chips on this record being my album of the year. This track in particular I love so much because the style is reminiscent of Wayne Shorter who is one of my all time favourites.
3. Jeff Parker - Happy Today (Album)
Genre: Jazz
This incredible new live album from the mighty Jeff Parker is well worth setting an hour aside for and listening with deep intention. The title of the record ‘Happy Today’ is about this joyous live performance against the backdrop of a really difficult year after being displaced by the Eaton fires - a powerful reminder of the power of music in dark times.
4. Brownswood Recordings - 20 Years Deep (Compilation)
Genre: Jazz, Soul, Dub & beyond
The new Brownswood compilation ‘20 Years Deep’ just came out which is an absolute treat and a much needed reminder of some great tracks that I’d forgotten about. And the big highlight is the previously unreleased Yussef Dayes track taken from his Youtube set at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan. A must watch if you haven’t seen it!
5. corto.alto - THIEF (Single)
Genre: Jazz Fusion, Broken Beat
The mighty corto.alto is back with a new single and it’s one of the coolest things I’ve listened to all year. It features a gnarly bass line, chopped up classical strings and a pounding club beat. I swear his music gets more exciting every time he drops something new.
6. Audrey Powne - Broken Record (Single)
Genre: Neo Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz
Audrey Powne takes inspiration from the one and only J Dilla on her wonderful new single that will take you straight back to the glory days of 90’s Neo Soul and Hip Hop. Featuring jazzy keys, crisp hip hop drums, smooth vocals and gorgeous trumpet lines - I can already tell that I’m going to be spending a lot of time with this track.
7. Jerk - as day breaks (Album)
Genre: Jazz, Hip Hop
Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Jerk returns with the second instalment of their day to night double EP journey and, much like the title suggests, it’s the perfect record to start your day to.
